Another possible Rocktober as the Colorado Rockies surge

Thanks to a terrible past couple of weeks for the San Diego Padres, the San Francisco Giants have made the National League West pennant race one to keep an eye on. Don’t look now, but the Colorado Rockies have made yet another late-season surge and with a 10-game winning streak have made it a three-team show. There’s still some work to be done before we witness another “Rocktober,” but the fact that Colorado is making this kind of thing a habit is pretty interesting.

The Rookie of the Year Award is not one of baseball’s most coveted honors. Those who win it sometimes do so because they are the “real deal,” and sometimes out of sheer luck and are “figured out” the next season. Nevertheless, it’s the RoY race is always as exciting as the playoff and MVP races, and this year’s crop of American League freshmen have put on quite a show. With less than three weeks left to play, deciding the winner may come down to who can end the year as hot as they started it.

The divergent paths of the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays both play in the American League East. The two also have names three words long with rhyming mascots, but beyond that, few similarities exist between the two franchises. Both have battled the best in the AL East, competing with the juggernauts from New York and Boston, but up until the 2008 season, there was little about the Rays and Jays for fans outside of Tampa Bay and Toronto take note of.

Tommy John Surgery not yet perfect

Tommy John Surgery has been in the spotlight a lot in recent years. Now that Stephen Strasburg has fallen victim and has begun the year-long recovery process, fans want to know more about what causes the surgery and why it’s so successful. First of all, it’s not. Not everybody recovers from TJS. Secondly, the ligaments that tear do so as a result of a 90 MPH or faster fastball. That’s all it takes, so it’s almost amazing that even more pitchers don’t need to have TJS more often.

Tom Brady and New England Patriots agree to Contract Extension

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots finally agreed on a four-year extension that will pay Brady $72 million with $48.5 million guaranteed. Considering all that he’s done for the organization, namely leading the team to three Super Bowls, it was only a matter of time before Brady re-upped with the Pats. It would have been shocking if Brady didn’t get the opportunity with the team he’s been with his whole career since 2000. Is Randy Moss, playing in his final year of his contract, up next to sign an extension with the Patriots? It doesn’t seem likely.

Miguel Cabrera is having a heck of a season. The Detroit first baseman has been spoken of as the potential first player since Carl Yastrzemski in 1967 to win the MLB hitting Triple Crown, but a lack of power in recent weeks as well as some bad luck has stalled his efforts, if not completely derailed them. Cabrera will need to put together one of the best months in baseball history if he wants to earn the honor so many seemed to think he could achieve.

Tomas Kaberle back with the Toronto Maple Leafs after summer of nothing

The Maple Leafs’ defenseman Tomas Kaberle and coach Ron Wilson say they like each other. Every other indication is that they don’t. Kaberle arrived back in Toronto for training camp and was immediately questioned by the media about the situation. This has been a continuous story older than the Kovalchuk contract, but it’s almost at the point where we can see if actions truly speak louder than words when these two interact with each other when the season begins.

If the playoffs were to begin tomorrow, the eight teams that will have earned the postseason berths would make for some interesting divisional series. The Dog Days of August seem to have carried over into September for baseball’s leaders as half of them seem to have hit a wall. Of all the playoff leaders, only the Minnesota Twins have a current winning streak of more than a single game. For the final three weeks of the season, teams are putting a lot of extra pressure on themselves right now.

Darrelle Revis Signs with New York Jets

Darrelle Revis and the New York Jets finally agreed to a deal that will bring back, arguably, the best cornerback in the NFL to the best defense in the league. Revis held out beginning on August 1st and is expected to come to New York today to sign his new contract. For all involved, including Jets fans, the whole process was a gut-wrenching and sad period of time. However, all can now rejoice as the Jets move up from simple playoff contender to Super Bowl contender. The rest of the NFL cannot be happy.

CC Sabathia, New York’s ace, is a four-time all-star. He is also a World Series Champion, won a Cy Young Award with the lowly Cleveland Indians in 2007, finished in the top five in voting two other times, finished runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 2001, and has even made a couple of attempts at league MVP. At 29-years of age, Sabathia has already had a better career than most. Despite all of this, he has never been a 20-game winner.
